Bálint Richter founded Cybersmart Aquatics in Milnerton, Cape Town, with a clear purpose: to create a structured swimming pathway in which every swimmer—from a nervous beginner entering the water for the first time to an athlete pursuing international competition—could develop with expert coaching, honest guidance and long-term direction.

With more than 20 years of experience in competitive swimming, athlete development and programme leadership, Bálint has helped build Cybersmart Aquatics into a complete swimming organisation spanning Learn-to-Swim, stroke correction, competitive squads and high-performance coaching.

His role extends far beyond writing training programmes. He develops swimmers, mentors coaches, shapes the club’s technical direction and ensures that every stage of the pathway connects logically to the next.

Structure before method

Bálint’s coaching philosophy is built around one defining principle:

“Structure before method.”

Great coaching is not simply a collection of drills or training sets. It begins with placing swimmers in the correct environment, establishing clear expectations and creating a progression they can understand and sustain.

Within that structure, coaching can be adapted to the swimmer in front of the coach. Technical ability, physical development, confidence, commitment and long-term potential all matter more than age alone.

This approach allows swimmers to progress as individuals while benefiting from the standards, accountability and energy of a team environment. The objective is not short-term improvement at any cost, but technically sound, resilient athletes capable of continuing to develop.

From first strokes to the international stage

Bálint has coached swimmers across the complete performance pathway—from foundational aquatic skills to Olympic qualification.

He played an important role in the long-term development of Cybersmart athlete Ethan du Preez, helping guide his progression through age-group swimming and international junior competition to qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where Ethan represented Team South Africa.

Ethan also represented South Africa at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games and the 2019 World Junior Championships in Budapest following his development within the Cybersmart coaching programme.

Bálint has also worked with Olympic champion Chad le Clos in training, bringing his technical and high-performance experience into an environment shaped by international expectations.

Building Cybersmart Aquatics

Under Bálint’s leadership, Cybersmart Aquatics has grown into a substantial swimming community while retaining its commitment to quality over quantity.

As recorded in June 2026, the programme had served more than 8,000 swimmers since its establishment and supported more than 600 active members.

Across the programme’s history, Cybersmart swimmers have achieved:

106 National Championship medals

280 Provincial Championship medals

117 Provincial Championship gold medals

Multiple national-team selections and international appearances

These achievements belong to the swimmers, families, coaches and support staff who have contributed to the programme. Bálint’s role has been to create the structure, standards and coaching culture in which that collective success can develop.

Developing coaches as well as athletes

A sustainable swimming programme cannot depend on one coach alone.

Throughout Cybersmart Aquatics’ development, Bálint has recruited, guided and led more than 120 coaches and staff members. He places strong emphasis on technical consistency, professional conduct, safeguarding, communication and continued learning.

Coaches are encouraged to understand not only what they teach, but why they teach it. This creates a more consistent experience for swimmers as they progress between levels and ensures that the club’s standards extend throughout the organisation.

For Bálint, developing knowledgeable and accountable coaches is an essential part of developing successful athletes.

Coaching beyond the stopwatch

Performance matters—but it is not the only measure of progress.

Bálint believes swimming should also develop discipline, confidence, resilience, personal responsibility and the ability to perform under pressure. These qualities support competitive success, but their value extends far beyond the pool.

Whether a swimmer is learning water safety, correcting a stroke, pursuing a provincial qualifying time or preparing for international competition, the standard remains the same: purposeful coaching, clear communication and a genuine commitment to long-term development.
